Recreation
The Cape York Girl Academy is where young mums and their bubs live and learn together.
Health facilities
Nursing facilities are provided by registered Indigenous health workers day and night in the school’s Health Centre. Should it be needed the excellent comprehensive facilities of the Cairns Hospital is within minutes of travel.
Am I eligible?
All Indigenous teenage girls who want to complete their schooling are welcome to apply. We understand that there can be many reasons for young girls disengaging with school. While the Cape York Girl Academy caters for young mothers and their children,
all girls needing a safe, cultural environment to complete their secondary schooling, are welcome to apply.
You are eligible if you:
- Want to complete your high school education
- 12–17 years of age
- Are pregnant or have a child 0–2 years
Recreation
On the weekends the focus is on fun and relaxation with opportunities such as swimming, art,
sport,
cultural activities and music clubs. Events and activities are also organized with other boarding schools to build networks and friendships outside our school family.
Life beyond the classroom
Creating strong futures is our central aim. The school has access to a comprehensive range of culturally-sensitive professionals who will support the girls to grow through any challenges brought about by past circumstances.
Our girls learn skills that will take them into life beyond the classroom:
- Indigenous leadership

- Healthy relationships
- Life skills—goal setting, time management, study skills
- Drug and alcohol counselling
- Forming healthy relationships
- Mental health support
- Family planning
- Physical health and well-being

- How to grow up healthy bubs and kids
Friendship
While nothing can break the incredible bond of family and community, boarding away for education can be hard at times. Indigenous girls in boarding school speak strong about sisterhood and lasting friendships formed when boarding with other girls.
Living with friends who have similar experiences not only provides connections and relationships for girls to lean on when times are tough, but learning together, and watching kids grow up together, makes each day exciting, fun and rewarding.
Community and culture
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which Cape York Girl Academy stands. Our school community will respect and take care of this land, honouring Elders past, present and future, as women and children grow together on this special country.
