Djarragun College students are thriving in vocational studies
Djarragun College's vocational courses provide students with pathways into a wide range of industries, such as Hospitality, Automotive, Building and Construction, and Childcare. They're not just learning, they're experiencing the very workforce they are interested in. So join us as we hear from four remarkable Djarragun College students who are grabbing this opportunity with both hands.
Ziarna Wilson-Neal
Ziarna, a Year 12 student, became interested in a Certificate II for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health two years ago after encouragement from Ms Anna, the course Tutor. This led Ziarna to join the course, which included work experience at the Gurriny Yealamucka Health Service Aboriginal Corporation one day a week for 10 weeks.
"I enjoy being upskilled every moment in this course," Ziarna said.
Ziarna learned how to take care of patients by checking their vital signs, like blood pressure, oxygen levels and temperature. Her next goal is to finish Year 12 and secure a healthcare role in the Australian Navy.
Valington Lui
Meet Valington – a humble Year 10 Djarragun College student from Poruma Island with a strong passion for cooking. Valington grew up watching with pride as his father cooked for the family and he takes those memories with him into the kitchen for every lesson of his Certificate II in Hospitality. Valington has his mind set on becoming a qualified chef to honour his roots and culture.
“This course has given me the courage to remain focused on what I want to achieve after school.” Valington said.
Shanina Kantilla
Shanina is a Year 10 student from Tiwi Islands who is currently completing a Certificate II in Hospitality, Shanina reminds us that you don't have to have all the answers about your future before you take the first step. The soft skills the students learn in the vocational courses are highly transferable to many career.
"I love cooking for my family," Shanina. " When I leave school I want to become a police officer."
Mylli Canendo
As a Year 10 Student from Yarrabah, Mylli is enjoying her Certificate II in Salon Assitant. She knows that pursuing her passion can open doors to a world of possibilities.
"I'd really like to work in a salon because it's really calming and I enjoy it a lot," she said.
