UNESCO is facilitating the organisation of the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, a follow up to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on “Rights of Indigenous Peoples” proclaimed in December 2016.

UNESCO, together with a range of different partners prepared an Action Plan, which will be presented for discussion in New York at the 17th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on 16th April 2018.

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is a high-level advisory body to the Economic and Social Council. The Forum was established back in 2000 with the mandate to deal with indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights.
