Jonathon ‘Jono’ Coker began his journey with Bama Services over a decade ago cutting grass. Now, he leads the business as Bama’s first Indigenous Operations Manager, ushering in a new stage of Indigenous employment and development.
As Bama’s longest-serving employee, Jono started in 2010 with a Certificate III in Horticulture as a facilities maintenance supervisor, managing a small crew when the business was still Djarragun Enterprises. Today, Jono leading the organisation. He oversees all facets of the business, from horticulture to construction and landscaping. Jono’s rise through the ranks wasn’t just about climbing the ladder – it was about learning every step of the way.
“If I ever felt unsure of something, I didn’t hesitate to ask for help,” Jono said. “But I also know how far I’ve come, from working on the ground leading the teams to running the business.”
In addition to hands-on experience, Jono holds a Certificate IV in Horticulture and a Certificate III in Landscape Construction. For Jono, Bama is a community, and he takes pride in mentoring younger employees, particularly Indigenous teammates. “I love that our wellbeing sessions bring everyone together – we're one big family,” he said.
Jono’s journey from a hands-on worker to a respected leader embodies Bama’s mission and proves that growth has no limits with the right opportunities, support and determination.
