Overview
School to Jobs (S2J) is a transformative initiative under Cape York Employment dedicated to bridging the gap between high school and meaningful employment for Indigenous youth. Recognising the critical support needed during this transitional phase, S2J works with senior students and graduates from Djarragun College, Cape York Girl Academy, and the Cape York Leaders Program to ensure they actively earn or learn after school.
The program connects young people to genuine employment opportunities and provides ongoing support as they adapt to the workforce. By partnering with employers to foster inclusive workplaces, S2J not only empowers youth to build sustainable careers but also contributes to breaking cycles of disadvantage, enabling them to thrive in their professional and personal lives.

Indigenous youth face significant barriers when transitioning from high school to employment. Only 58% of Indigenous youth aged 15-24 are engaged in education, employment, or training, and these statistics drop even further in remote areas such as Cape York. The support youth receive during this critical transition can determine whether they embark on a lifelong career or face long-term unemployment.
School to Jobs (S2J) is changing this narrative by providing targeted support to ensure youth graduate and move directly into meaningful jobs or further education. By addressing these barriers early, we empower young people to take control of their futures and break the cycle of disadvantage.
What we are doing
School to Jobs works directly with senior students and graduates from Djarragun College, Cape York Girl Academy, and Cape York Leaders Program to connect them with jobs and support their transition into the workforce.
S2J provides tailored support to both the students and their employers, ensuring that the workplace is inclusive for the student and allows them to succeed. We are committed to helping Indigenous youth secure long-term, meaningful employment, paving the way for sustainable futures and contributing to stronger communities across Cape York.
Our Employers
School to Jobs supports senior students from Djarragun College, the Cape York Leaders Program and the Cape York Girl Academy as they transition into employment. The initiative provides mentoring in the final years of schooling and creates clear pathways into apprenticeships and traineeships. Employers across Cairns and Cape York host students in their workplaces, building practical, on-the-job skills aligned with structured training plans across industries including hospitality, engineering, construction, carpentry and childcare, while contributing to a skilled, job-ready workforce for regional communities and businesses.
