School to Jobs CYGA girl outside Hartley's

Sinking their teeth into wildlife and tourism

Cape York Girl Academy students gain real-world experience at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures.

Cape York Girl Academy students Maree Owens and Vivienne Long recently completed work experience placements at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, thanks to support from the School to Jobs program. These placements provided a unique opportunity for the girls to step out of the classroom and into a working environment, developing job-ready skills and confidence in a real-world setting. From welcoming international tourists to feeding crocodiles, Maree and Vivienne embraced their roles and the experience.

After being approached by School to Jobs, Janine Mayo, the operations manager at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures was more than happy to collaborate.,

“We thought it would be a great opportunity to give the girls a space to experience employment at Hartley’s Creek,” Janine said. “There was no hesitation from them. They jumped at the chance and have really enjoyed their roles.”

Maree Owens gained invaluable experience in customer experience as she handled guest check-ins, bookings and assisted in the retail shop. She learned to operate the till, process invoices, and interact with customers. Throughout her experience, Maree engaged with visitors from various parts of the world, appreciating their politeness and friendliness. These roles in reservations and retail were a great fit for me, providing the chance to connect with people, something I really enjoy” Maree said.

Vivienne Holding a Koala

Vivienne took on a hands-on role as a park keeper, primarily responsible for caring for the animals. Her tasks included feeding the crocodiles, an experience that was both thrilling and daunting. "Seeing them up close was terrifying at first but exciting too," she shared. Vivienne enjoyed balancing the calmness of holding koalas with the adrenaline rush of handling large pythons and being near crocodiles. She adapted to the early mornings and daily routines.

"It's been a big change, but I've enjoyed it," she said. Vivienne appreciated the support from School to Jobs for creating a smooth work experience.

“It's important for these students to get hands on work experience whilst at school,” School to Jobs Manager Karl Adams said.

It helps create a pathway to employment and something for their resume. Part of our role is to connect these students with placements in industries they have a passion for so they get an understanding of what a career might look like.”

For these two students from Cape York Girl Academy, it was a hands-on experience that has helped prepare them for the next steps after school.
