The Role:
As a Financial Counsellor, you will provide vital financial information, support and advocacy to individuals, families and groups experiencing financial stress or disadvantage. You’ll help clients understand their rights, assess their financial situation, explore options and negotiate with creditors — ensuring they’re empowered to take control of their financial future.
A core part of your role will also be mentoring O‑Hub staff to strengthen community‑based delivery of Money Management and financial capability activities.
This position is based in Cairns, with travel to remote Cape York communities for approximately 2 weeks per month.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide financial counselling including assessments, option development and advocacy with creditors.
- Deliver paralegal information on issues such as household bills, loans, credit cards, fines, taxation and more.
- Coach and mentor Financial Counsellor Intern/s as they progress through their respective qualifications.
- Mentor and support O Hub staff, building capability in financial counselling processes.
- Promote Opportunity Hub products and build strong community engagement.
- Support continuous improvement, including data monitoring, reporting and quality practice.
- Network with community partners to strengthen service delivery.
- Maintain accurate client records and contribute to all reporting requirements.
What you’ll need:
- Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling).
- Membership with Financial Counsellors Association of Queensland (FCQ).
- Experience delivering community education programs.
- Strong digital literacy and confidence with databases and MS Office.
- Experience mentoring or training staff.
- An understanding of First Nations cultures, particularly Cape York contexts.
- Current Driver Licence.
- Working with Children Blue Card (or an ability to obtain).
- National Police Check.
Desirable:
- Certificate IV in Training & Assessment.
- Understanding of political and legal frameworks relating to financial counselling.
- Willingness to travel extensively in remote areas (including 4WD).
