Graduates from Djarragun College Cape York Girl Academy and come together in a spirited celebration of unity, pride and promise.
Students, staff and families from communities across Northern Australia and the Torres Strait gathered at the Pullman International in Cairns for a morning to honour the milestone in a shared presentation ceremony to honour the strength, effort and determination of every student stepping onto the stage.
The event also welcomed Cape York Partnership Group CEO Fiona Jose, Federal Member for Leichhardt Matt Smith MP and State Member for Mulgrave Terry James MP, who helped present awards to students. Their involvement added to the sense of occasion and reinforced the importance of recognising young people who have worked hard throughout the year.
Principal Michael Barton reflected on the significance of the day.
“Our Presentation Day is the one day a year in which our whole college community comes together to celebrate,” he said. “And this is the first time we have joined with the Cape York Girl Academy making today even more special and something we are all incredibly proud of.”
It marked a new chapter for both schools, united in their commitment to lifting aspirations and supporting their students.
Djarragun’s DUX, Solace Barnaby, spoke confidently about her journey and thanked teachers and family members who helped her reach her goals.
“I completed four certificates during my education at Djarragun College: a Cert II in Hospitality, a Cert II in Salon Assistant, a Cert II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways, and a Cert III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts. I am currently undergoing a traineeship with CYP, where I am working to complete my Certificate III in Business. Once I’ve completed my traineeship, I’m going to look for a tattoo apprenticeship and pursue a career in that industry.”
Djarragun College has seen 1,000+ graduates from 36 language groups. Year 12 completion remains one of the most powerful levers for closing the gap, because it turns aspiration into option. Each Year 12 graduate who crossed the stage did so with real-world qualifications and a clear pathway to further training, university or meaningful employment. They are ready to earn or learn.
The 2025 graduating class stands as a strong example of what happens when young people are supported, encouraged and given every opportunity to thrive.
