Young leaders from Cape York gathered on the Sunshine Coast for the annual Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP) Leadership Camp, spending six days immersed in adventure, leadership and reflection.
The cohort came together ahead of the 2026 school year to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Over the course of the week they participated in structured activities designed to challenge them, push them out of their comfort zones and help them grow their already burgeoning leadership skills. Activities such as giant swings, an alpine rescue obstacle course and bodyboarding were among the favourites.
Students who have been part of the program for many years and are now in their final year spoke about how CYLP shaped their leadership journey, including Year 12 Aurukun student Jaydis Woola.
“It’s pretty surreal to graduate because I remember attending school in Year 7. It was pretty different,” he said. “Back then I had people to look up to but now, I feel like the kids look up to me.”
The Brisbane Boys College Senior initially focused on architecture, but after completing a Cert III in Fitness, Jaydis developed an interest in healthcare, especially physiotherapy.
“I want to be a better person in the future and go to university,” he said. “I completed a Cert III in Fitness, which helped pave the way to helping people.”
The annual Leadership Camp not only provides CYLP scholars with a place to meet up and reconnect, but it also sets high expectations for the year, has them set goals and develop meaningful leadership skills. They then take all that into the upcoming school year and beyond, with many students continuing to display the leadership skills taught for years to come. Many program alumni and current tertiary scholars returned to this year’s camp to give back to the program that gave them so much. Returning as supervisors and role models, they were walking examples of the path that CYLP can create.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for you to make friends and families for life,” Tertiary scholar Amily Phinesea said. “After this program, if you ever need any help, the CYLP family is here for you. As you go through the program, pass on what you’ve learned and make space for the younger ones.”
The camp activities centred on collaboration and problem-solving. The young scholars worked in groups, supported each other through challenges and reflected on what strong leadership looks like in their schools, families and communities. Time was also set aside for quiet reflection and goal setting where the leaders were encouraged to think about the year ahead and how they could positively influence those around them.
The Leadership Camp is a highlight of the CYLP calendar, eagerly anticipated by every student before the new school year begins. The camp helps students develop teamwork, communication and networking skills. By the camp’s conclusion, the young leaders forged strong friendships, gained practical leadership strategies and renewed their motivation for the school year ahead.
