Building Confidence in the Big City

With a mix of nerves and excitement, Year 7 student Jahleriah left her family in Hope Vale to begin boarding at Stuartholme School in Brisbane through the Cape York Leaders Program.

“Wow, this is a big school, this is a big city,” were her first words stepping onto campus.

Reflecting on her first days, she says, “It was hard at first because I was moving away from my family,” she admits.

But as the weeks went on, making new friends and learning about city life turned the challenge into an opportunity.

Supported by CYLP, Jahleriah has found her rhythm. “I try to focus on my schoolwork and then I just get help from other people. CYLP give me a lot of support,” she says.

Tutors, mentors and the boarding community have become her extended family, guiding her through each step. Now, with courage and confidence, Jahleriah shares her message to others thinking about boarding “There’s nothing to be afraid of. CYLP got you.”
