Family Ties Carry Nikkysha Forward

From Hope Vale to boarding life, Nikkysha Bowen has always drawn strength from home

When Nikkysha Bowen began Year 7 boarding at Columba Catholic College at Charters Towers through the Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP), she entered something new but not unfamiliar, as her older cousins were already in CYLP and paved her way.

“My cousins were on it, and mum thought it would be a good idea,” she said. “They're in Years 10 and 8, so I felt part of it already.”

The move from Hope Vale to a structured boarding life brought both excitement and nerves, marking the beginning of a new chapter.

“I was alright, but nervous,” she said. “Meeting new people was the biggest challenge.”

To help settle in, Nikkysha found her stride by staying active, joining touch and rugby league, and discovering her favourite subjects: Woodwork and English. She loves making things in Woodwork and enjoys the problem-solving and creativity of English.

For Nikkysha, faith studies turned out to be the biggest challenge. “Religion was hard, learning about Jerusalem and other stuff. But I stuck at it and it got easier.”

Beyond academics, CYLP’s support extends to practical needs, such as books, pencils, uniforms and shoes. This assistance has allowed Nikkysha to focus more on her learning and adjusting to boarding life.

“I don’t know what I’d do without it,” she said. “Having my supplies sorted makes a big difference.”

When she returns home, Nikkysha strengthens her community connection by spending time beachside with her dad, fishing, crabbing and playing with her younger siblings.

CYLP has ignited new ambitions in Nikkysha. She dreams of playing rugby league and may follow her uncle, a respected ex-player.

“Uncle Matty (Bowen) was a player,” she said. “He’s got skills, speed and he works well with his team. I want to give him a run for his money.”

For others thinking about CYLP, Nikkysha’s advice is straightforward:

“You’ll get educated more and have more chances. It’s the right choice.”

And when it comes to finishing school?

“It’s important so you can go to university – if you want to. But mostly, it’s about making the most of what you have now.”
