Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP) graduating Year 12 scholar El’leija Creek is closing the chapter on her secondary schooling with pride, gratitude and a bold vision for the future. After joining the program in Year 7 and spending her high school years at Stuartholme in Brisbane, she now looks ahead to university studies in architectural design – a dream sparked by unexpected inspiration and strengthened by CYLP.
Growing up with a strong family connection to the program, she followed in the footsteps of her older brother, Chasten Creek, a CYLP graduate, and now leads the way for her younger sister Annie, who will begin her CYLP journey next year.
Reflecting on her time in the program, El’leija described it as “very enjoyable” and full of learning.
"They (CYLP) taught me a lot and gave me strong support," she said.
Leaving home to attend school in a big city came with challenges, but the CYLP network and older scholars eased her transition into boarding life.
“It was hard at first being in a big city, not knowing anybody. But over time, with CYP’s support and the older girls on the scholarship, I became more comfortable. Their encouragement helped me get out there and make friends.”
Initially drawn to art and curatorial work, her career direction shifted after attending a university STEM camp at the University of Queensland earlier this year.
“Being there showed me a whole other side of STEM and I found it very interesting.”
She is now applying to study a Bachelor of Architectural Design at either UQ or QUT next year, and hopes to continue as a CYLP Tertiary Scholar
“I think the support will have an even bigger impact now. High school prepared me for the world, but this is setting me up for years to come,” she said.
Like many alumni before her, El’leija plans give back and return to support younger scholars in the years to come.
“Even if I don’t share the same dreams as them, it’s about being a bit of inspiration – letting them know they can do anything if they put their mind to it,” she said.
El’leija knows firsthand how important those role models can be. Her brother’s guidance and the encouragement of older scholars were instrumental throughout her journey.
As she graduates and prepares for what’s next, El’leija exemplifies the resilience and leadership emerging from CYLP scholars across Cape York.
