How a Cape York Leaders Program scholar is going from big sister to future nurse.
From an early age, Kishtarna Minniecon has always put others first. Compassion and care come naturally. These qualities have shaped her daily life and her dreams for the future.
Growing up in Mossman Gorge as the eldest sibling, Kishtarna was always close to her sisters. When the youngest was born, she quietly stepped up, helping to dress, soothe and care for her.
Now in Year 8 at The Cathedral School in Townsville and part of the Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP), her caring instinct has grown into something more: she wants to become a paediatric or neonatal nurse.
“I’ve always looked after my little sisters,” she said. “And I realised – I want to do that for others too.”
Her journey with CYLP began two years ago. Inspired by her aunt Karina – a former CYLP scholar and graduate of the same school – Kishtarna saw where she could go with the support of CYLP and her own dedication.
“I remember going to my nan’s house, waiting to see my auntie come home from boarding school,” she said. “I looked up to her.”
Leaving home was a challenge. The rules, routines and food were unfamiliar. “I really missed my mum’s cooking,” Kishtarna said . “Home food is cultural and made with extra love.”
With the support of CYLP staff, mentors and new friends, Kishtarna found her place. CYLP staff members Kylie, Tamara and Hollie all checked in on her, which helped especially when she felt homesick.
Maths is now her favourite subject. She enjoys both the challenge and the satisfaction it brings and she hopes her younger sister will soon join the program too.
“CYLP has opened up so many opportunities,” she said. “It helps you try new things, meet new people and prepares you for the future.
“[Finishing school] prepares you for jobs and life, but it’s also about enjoying this time, being with your friends, and making the most of it.”
For Kishtarna, care is who she is. With CYLP behind her, she’s now on her way to turning that lifelong instinct into a meaningful career.
