From Coen to Columba. How a Cape York Leaders Program scholarship is helping siblings thrive in boarding life
For siblings Latisha and Conrad Spratt from Coen, moving away from home to pursue a better education on a Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP), scholarship, was a big and unfamiliar step. Now in Year 11 and Year 9 respectively, the pair have settled into life at Columba Catholic College in Charters Towers with confidence and maturity. With help from CYLP, they were easily able to step into a rhythm and grow accustomed to their home away from home.
The siblings reflected on their journey to boarding school as one full of growth, learning and discovery. For Latisha, she described adjusting to life at boarding school as a challenge that taught her independence and discipline.
It was different because we had routines, like making our beds every morning, doing chores and keeping our rooms tidy

“Those small habits soon became part of her everyday life. Her favourite subjects are Health and Physical Education (HPE) and Art. “HPE keeps me active and sportish, and art helps me stay calm and focused,” she explained.
Latisha and Conrad share a close and supportive bond that has made their boarding school experience even more rewarding. They encourage each other through challenges and celebrate each other’s successes. Their strong connection gives them the confidence to keep striving toward their goals together.
CYLP assists young people from remote communities to attend the best boarding schools in Queensland and supports them along the way with anything they may need. CYLP played a big role in helping Latisha stay on track by purchasing books, equipment and providing support and helping her remain on track with her studies.
When she returns home for holidays, her parents always notice how much she has grown and matured. “They’ve seen I’m more confident, cleaner and responsible. I even worked at the Coen shop during the holidays,” Latisha said.
The younger of the pair, Conrad, shares that same motivation. “I heard about CYLP in primary school when my big sister joined,” he said. They’ve helped me with school essentials and guided me through life.”
Conrad enjoys the opportunities at Columba, especially the hands-on learning.

His favourite subject is HPE and he’s already thinking ahead, eyeing off a potential diesel-fitting apprenticeship inspired by his dad, who gave good advice and instilled a strong work ethic.
Both siblings understand the importance of finishing school. As Latisha puts it, “It’s important to finish high school so you can get into uni, get a job and be a role model for younger students.”
With the support of CYLP, both Latisha and Conrad are chasing their dreams and inspiring others from their community to do the same.
