Hezra Rankin’s journey with CYLP has only just begun
Exchanging family fishing trips with the bustling streets of Brisbane and the study that comes with it at Marist College Ashgrove wasn’t easy for Hope Vale’s Hezra Rankin, but with with courage, consistency and the support of the Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP), he’s making the most of every opportunity that comes his way.
Hezra is the first in his immediate family to join CYLP, although he has a few cousins who’ve been through the program. “Mum and Dad helped me get in,” he said, reflecting on how it all began. The shift to a bigger school came with some nerves. “It was scary… big school, lots of people,” he said. But making friends and having his boarding mates close made all the difference.
Hezra believes boarding school has opened up a world of possibilities. “Just more opportunities than back home… like footy,” He said. Hezra likes to play centre and proudly backs the Broncos. “I like Herbie Farnworth – just his runs and breaks,” he said.
Hezra’s favourite subject is HPE. “You get to go outside and play,” he said, preferring open air to the classroom. When it comes to challenges, maths has been a tough one but with tutoring support from school and encouragement from CYLP, he’s steadily improving.
CYLP has also helped in practical ways, providing uniforms, footy gear and essentials such as shoes and stationery. It’s support that helps him stay focused on what matters – learning, growing and staying on track.
Back home, Hezra enjoys the simple things like “sleep and fishing for barra with mates and family,” he said. His parents have noticed the changes since he started boarding. “Getting taller… making my bed, waking up early,” he said. He’s also picked up habits like cleaning and helping out more around the house.
For younger students thinking about CYLP, Hezra’s advice is clear: “Work hard, go to school every day.” He knows that finishing high school means building a better future. “So I can go to university… learn more,” he said.
His dream? To play in the NRL. And he’s got the right mindset to get there, “don’t give up.”
Hezra is showing up, backing himself and building a foundation with CYLP that will take him wherever he wants to go.
