Anchored by family and friends

Tyeisha Creek remembers feeling nervous at first. A new school, a new place and the longest she’d ever been away from home. But with the support of her family and the Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP), she stepped into something bigger than she expected — independence, opportunity and a growing sense of purpose.

“I got involved with CYLP because I had cousins and family members attending… my mum thought it would be a privilege for me to join as well,” she said. With strong family ties to the program, Tyeisha had a glimpse of what was possible.

The early days weren’t easy. “It was really scary and nervous at the same time… I didn’t know I would make friends,” she said. But those fears faded as she settled into her new school. “Now I’ve made a lot, and I know my way around… even though I still get lost sometimes."

Art, Science and Religion are her favourite subjects, each one offering something different. “At my old school, I didn’t really get the chance to do any art… now I get to do paintings, sculptures and more.” Inspired by her dad, she has found a creative outlet that brings her joy and confidence.

Her biggest challenges have been navigating a new environment and stepping out of her comfort zone. But she’s committed. “I now do rugby and touch football… It’s fun, because I get to play with new people and go to new places.” These experiences have helped her build resilience and enjoy new friendships.

CYLP has been there every step of the way.

They (CYLP) always told me not to back down. When something hard comes, I try to figure out a way around it.

Whether it’s encouragement, study support or providing sports gear, the program helps her stay on track and fully participate.

Away from school, Tyeisha reconnects with family through fishing, camping and “yarning with cousins.” It’s that balance between home and school, tradition and new experiences, that keeps her grounded. “I’ve gotten much healthier and stronger,” she said. “I’m eating more and feeling better.”

Looking ahead, Tyeisha’s ambitions are clear. “Since Grade 5, I’ve always thought of going into the army or navy,” she said. Tyeisha is inspired by the armed forces' protection and support of communities, particularly their role in safeguarding and assisting those in need. “I’ve never been on big boats, and I’ve always wanted to work on boats… to feel what it’s like to be in the armed forces.”

Her advice to younger students is simple: “It’s actually really good. You could make new friends… they help you with your stuff, get organised for school and figure out what you want to be in the future.”
