SCHOOL TO JOBS

Building pathways from school to earning or learning

Overview

School to Jobs (S2J) is a transformative initiative dedicated to bridging the gap between high school and meaningful employment for Indigenous youth.

Recognising the critical support needed during this transitional phase, S2J works with senior students and graduates from Djarragun College, Cape York Girl Academy and Cape York Leaders Program to ensure they are actively earning or learning when they leave school.

Through mentoring, transition planning, employer partnerships and practical job-readiness support, School to Jobs helps young people build confidence and take the next step towards long-term economic independence

Why it Matters

Too many young Indigenous people leave school without a clear pathway into work, training or further study.

Only 58% of Indigenous youth aged 15-24 are engaged in education, employment, or training, and these statistics drop even further in remote areas such as Cape York. The support youth receive during this critical transition can determine whether they embark on a lifelong career or face long-term unemployment.

School to Jobs bridges this gap by preparing young people early, connecting them with real employers and supporting them to step into work, study or training with confidence.

What we are doing

School to Jobs provides tailored transition support, including coaching, mentoring, resume development, job and apprenticeship applications, interview preparation and workplace readiness.

The program helps remove practical barriers by supporting access to licences, white cards, uniforms, transport and other job-readiness requirements.

School to Jobs also works with employers to create inclusive workplaces and real pathways into apprenticeships, traineeships and employment across industries such as hospitality, engineering, construction, carpentry and childcare.

Our Employers

In 2025, we partnered with 23 employers, helping 44 young people secure employment with partner organisations.

These employers are building the next generation of Indigenous workers. By opening their workplaces, sharing skills and backing young people early, they are building stronger communities.

School to Jobs supports employers before and during placement, helping them understand each young person’s strengths, needs and goals, prepare for their arrival and create culturally safe workplaces where new employees can settle, learn and stay on track.
