Overview
Birrgal Restaurant is Djarragun College’s hospitality training restaurant in Cairns CBD, giving students hands-on industry experience in kitchen operations, food service and event delivery.
Students train towards nationally recognised qualifications while supporting formal functions, school catering and practical service activities.
Birrgal helps students build confidence, professionalism and workplace skills they can carry into employment, apprenticeships, traineeships or further training in hospitality and related industries.
Why it Matters
Too few Indigenous young people get access to practical, industry-style training environments that build real workplace confidence before they leave school.
Birrgal Restaurant was created by Djarragun College to provide that opportunity. It gives students a supported place to learn hospitality skills, practise professional standards and experience the expectations of a real service environment.
Through Birrgal, students can see a clearer pathway from school into work, further training and long-term independence.
what we're doing
Birrgal is helping Djarragun College students earn nationally recognised hospitality qualifications they can carry into workplaces across Cairns, Cape York and beyond.
Students apply their training by helping deliver successful formal events for important guests, partners and dignitaries, proving their capability in a professional service environment.
The next phase is to grow Birrgal into a full-service public restaurant. This will create a stronger pathway from training to paid work, giving students the chance to build skills, gain experience and step into real hospitality jobs.
