Djarragun College stepped right up for 2024 Cairns Show in July. Vocational Education students participated by selling food, coffee and student artwork, childminding, football challenges, conducting mini health checks and braiding hair. This involvement allowed students from various Certificate programs, including the Hospitality, Salon, Outdoor Rec and Arts, to showcase their skills to the Cairns public.
Year 11 student Solace Barnaby, enrolled in the Hospitality Certificate II program, worked in the coffee van and at the food truck. "It was a great opportunity to put the skills I’ve learned into practice outside of school," Solace said. "I was also able to sell a few prints of my artworks that were on display."
Djarragun has made a tradition of participating at the Cairns Show, offering opportunities for students to work at the stalls or submit to the various art competitions or for sale.
Students in Year 10 and above can enrol in a range of Certificates, such as Beauty, Hospitality, Horticulture, Sports, Arts, Construction, Childcare Community Services. These programs help prepare students for future careers and build their confidence.
Djarragun College's participation in the Cairns Show reflects its commitment to providing students with practical experience and opportunities for personal and professional growth. The courses were selected to address skills shortages in Queensland and the local Cairns region to ensure Djarragun students have employment pathways available to them when they complete Year 12.
