Margo Koonutta Moulds Her Path with Cape York Employment

We’re proud to share the inspiring story of Margo Koonutta, a talented First Nations artist, who has recently joined the team at Akay Koo'oila Women’s Art Centre in Aurukun as the Art Centre Assistant.

Margo first started attending the Art Centre a few years ago as part of our CDP program — a safe, familiar space where she could stay connected and pursue her passion for art. She quickly developed a love for creating pottery and supporting the daily activities of the Centre. Her dedication and enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed.

Thanks to her hard work, and with support from Cape York Employment through the Workforce Development Program funded by the NIAA, Margo was offered a wonderful opportunity — a role at the Art Centre. Now, she enjoys making beautiful bowls, vases, mugs, and dogs and helping with community workshops.

Margo’s story is a powerful reminder of what perseverance, community support, and opportunities can achieve. We’re excited to see her grow and continue sharing her talents with her community!
