Where is aurukun?

Aurukun is a remote Indigenous community of around 1,250 people located on the western coastline of Queensland’s Cape York. The township is surrounded by the Archer, Watson and Ward Rivers.

800 kilometres northwest of Cairns, Aurukun is a 100-minute flight or 10-hour drive. The closest major town is Weipa – a 15-minute flight or 2.5-hour drive north

Aurukun is cut off to road transport from the south for much of the wet season each year.

Culture

Aurukun Shire and its surrounds are the traditional homelands for the Wik, Wik Way and Kugu people. More than 85% of Aurukun locals speak a traditional Indigenous language at home. For most, that language is Wik Mungkan.

Culture is alive and strong among the five local clan groups – Apalech, Winchanam, Wanam, Chara and Puutch – and their stories are conveyed through an array of arts and craft visible at the local art centres. You can even join workshops to learn their traditional techniques.

Lifestyle

Living in Aurukun, you’ll have one of the best playgrounds for camping, fishing and adventure right on your new doorstep.

Abundant in natural beauty, Aurukun offers a lifestyle closely connected to the cycles of nature. Most locals enjoy time fishing and hunting, and are happy to share their knowledge.

For those seeking social sports, there's a tennis court, basketball at the local PCYC and Kang Kang Rugby League team compete in Weipa.

The men’s and women’s art centres are also colourful hubs for social connection and artistic expression.
