Jobs can be a powerful force for change in a community and Cape York Employment (CYE) is committed to creating pathways that make a real difference, just like with Lockhart River local Paddy Hobson.
Paddy was one of three who recently stepped into vital security roles in Lockhart River and he is taking an active part in supporting his community while reducing the need for FIFO workers.
With aspirations to become a police officer, Paddy connected with CYE to explore opportunities after trying his hand at being a carpenter and other odd jobs. However, they never stuck as Paddy continued to pursue his dream job of being in the Queensland Police Service. Through CYE’s support, he joined the Queensland Police Protective Services Group (PSG) program, which trains locals to become Protective Security Officers. After five weeks of intensive training at the Queensland Police Academy in Townsville, Paddy graduated and now plays a critical role in the Lockhart River community, focusing on school security and student safety.
Paddy’s involvement strengthens community safety and showcases the potential for local talent to fill critical roles. His dedication and efforts also have a ripple effect, with the entire community rallying behind him.
“Finding out I had heaps of support helped me a lot. It wasn’t just my mum and dad – the whole community backed me,” he said.
Cape York Employment helped Paddy navigate the program’s process, assisting with forms and coordinating with the Queensland Police Service. According to CYE Lockhart River team leader Maria Zaro, the commitment and positive attitude of jobseekers like Paddy made them ideal candidates for the program.
“I recognised their potential and saw they had the right traits for these roles,” Maria said.
"Building a rapport with jobseekers, I found them friendly and displaying positive communication skills, including eye contact, facial expression and active listening."
Paddy’s advice for others considering this path is simple:
My advice is if you ever get the opportunity to join QPS – do it. If you want to make a difference in your community – do it. If you believe in right and wrong – then do it. If you want to keep your community safe – do it.
