CYP honoured with Indigenous Excellence Award

A clear mission and passionate staff have steered Cape York Partnership (CYP) towards being awarded the Indigenous Business Excellence Award at the prestigious 2024 Cairns Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards (BEX) in October.

CYP now joins a line-up of exceptional Indigenous businesses and initiatives that have made a significant impact or contribution to the Indigenous community.

This recognition highlights the work CYP has done empowering First Nations people across Far North Queensland and reflects a commitment to creating real change in communities from Cairns to Cape York. CYP has made a lasting impact over the past two decades by focusing on education, employment, health and cultural preservation.

Their 370+ employees – 65 per cent Indigenous – play a crucial role in delivering the Indigenous-led development and empowerment.

CYP Group CEO Fiona Jose was humbled by the honour and insisted that it was due to the work of the staff and the involvement of Cape York communities that led to receiving the award.

This award is an excellent acknowledgment of our team’s daily hard work. It recognises the passion and dedication of our people, especially those working directly in our communities

“Their efforts are what make our mission possible. We don’t see this as just a win for Cape York Partnership but for the families and communities we serve.

One of the judges praised CYP as a model for Indigenous-led development and an “outstanding nonprofit”.

“CYP’s commitment to sustainable development and measurable outcomes showcases their transformative role in improving the lives of Indigenous Australians,” they said.

“CYP is a transformative organisation with a clear mission driving its success.”

Another judge said many of CYP’s entities, such as Mayi Market, School to Jobs, Pama Platform, and others, are “hugely commendable initiatives.”

“The collection of initiatives included are compelling and demonstrate a holistic approach to supporting Indigenous Australians and communities,” they said.

Challenges, like addressing intergenerational trauma and geographical isolation, have been met with culturally informed solutions, making CYP a model for Indigenous-led development.

While Ms Jose is proud of what CYP has accomplished, she recognises that more must be done.

“This award serves as a reminder that when we work together, we can achieve great things. It motivates us to continue pushing forward and find new ways to support and uplift Indigenous families in Far North Queensland,” she said.

“Every success story is a step closer to breaking the cycle of disadvantage and creating a future where every person has the opportunity to thrive.”

CYP congratulates the other Indigenous Business Excellence category finalists for their outstanding work and are honoured to share this space with organisations that are making a positive impact in our region.
