Forging Future Leaders in Weipa

In Weipa, Cape York Institute Policy and Leadership, Skills to Lead program has inspired participants from Aurukun, Napranum and Weipa, to step into their roles as confident and purposeful leaders within their communities. Designed to build self-awareness, leadership skills, and cultural connection, the program is shaping a new generation of leaders who are prepared to create meaningful change. The journey began with a focus on self-awareness, guiding participants reflect on their values, strengths, and goals. This foundation proved vital for effective self-leadership. Participant Ebony Doyle shared, “I feel like leadership in its nature must come from a genuine place. It's also important just within my relationship with myself, how I live my life and how I work and how I lead myself through each day and through what I value, and then through how I act on those values.” 

The next phase of the program emphasised practical leadership skills, including effective communication, team management, and project planning. These skills were tested in a community-based project, allowing participants to apply their learning in real-world scenarios. , 

A significant highlight of the program was the On Country experience in Mapoon, where participants engaged in cultural workshops and connected with local community members. Activities included visits to the Mapoon Cultural Centre, where participants learned about the missionary era, the history of Captain Cook and the impact of the Stolen Generation,  fishing at Cullen Point provided an opportunity to reflected on their journey while embracing the natural environment.  

Joyce Waia one of the participants, described the experience as deeply meaningful: “The trip out to Mapoon Cultural Centre was very interesting understanding the community missionary days, history with Captain Cook and stolen generations.” 

By the program’s conclusion, participants had not only acquired valuable leadership skills but also strengthened their connection to their culture and community. Floria, the Program Manager, emphasised the lasting impact of the program, saying, “It fosters a new generation of leaders who are deeply connected to their culture and commits them to create a positive change through community leadership.”
