Cutting through the grass ceiling

The hum of garden equipment breaks the early morning quiet and Helena Hollingsworth, undeterred by the already hot Queensland sun, maneuvers her ride-on mower across a lush yard while others work with pruners and edgers. A few months ago, Helena was starting her journey with Bama Services. Now, she’s stepped up as the company’s first Indigenous female garden maintenance supervisor, leading a crew of three who maintain gardens at multiple locations throughout Cairns.

“I didn’t even know I was the first Indigenous female supervisor here – it’s exciting now that I do,” Helena said. Joining Bama Services in September, her leadership qualities quickly stood out and within two months, she was promoted to supervisor.

“At first, it was a little difficult – learning to give directions and getting the crew into a routine. But it’s getting easier now,” she said. “The crew is respectful and listens well. They make my days enjoyable.”

A young single mother of two, Helena balances her demanding role with her family life. Her children, aged seven and two, are her biggest supporters. “My kids think it’s fun that I ride the mower. They love hearing about my work,” she said.

In an industry often seen as male-dominated, Helana is determined to challenge the status quo. “I love being outside, working hands-on and fixing things. It suits me. One day, I’d love to lead an all-female crew. That’s my dream,” she said.

For Helena, a job at Bama is more than a paycheck – it’s about creating a brighter future. “Having a job means I can give my kids more – a better education, better living. It’s also about being a role model,” she said.

Bama Services has also allowed Helena to grow and inspire others. “The management here is so supportive. They’ve helped me get training and tickets to build my skills,” she said. “Bama gives people like me a chance to prove themselves.”

Bama Services has given Helena an incredible opportunity – one she has embraced with both hands. She has earned a promotion on merit and is teaching her children the value of hard work and determination. Helena's journey is a powerful example for other women, showing that barriers can be broken and new paths can be forged in any field.
