Alan outside workshop

Returning to his roots

When Alan Dick graduated from Djarragun College, he walked straight into a job in garden maintenance with Djarragun Enterprises. As Alan progressed through various roles including with the Army Reserve, the organisation also evolved and grew into Bama Services. Over a decade later, Alan has now returned to the company as a garden maintenance supervisor.

“I was one of the first to join when it was Djarragun Enterprises. One of the originals,” Alan said. “That was a long time ago, a lot has changed but I’m loving being back.”

During Alan’s first stint, he gained hands-on experience and developed skills to shape his future.

“It was a really good starting point. I took a lot from my time here when I went to join the Army Reserve. After that I was doing a bit of everything,” he shared.

Returning to Bama Services in 2024, Alan has embraced his new role as a garden maintenance supervisor.

“It’s been great,” he said. “ I feel like I’m finding my feet as a supervisor now.” Alan’s responsibilities include managing a small crew maintaining the green spaces for QBuild unit complexes in south Cairns. “I love the work – being outside and hands-on, pushing mowers, snipping,” he said. “Seeing the before and afters and transformations is very satisfying.”

He also appreciates the supportive environment at Bama Services. “The crew pitch in and pull their weight, and the managers are supportive, approachable – awesome people to work with,” he shared.

Beyond the tasks, Alan values the stability and pride his job brings. “This is my dream job. I enjoy the work, and being a supervisor is rewarding. I’ve got no plans to leave anytime soon,” he said. “When people have work, they have pride. It’s about building confidence and creating a future.”

For Alan, coming full circle back to Bama Services feels like coming home. It’s a place where he can work hard, grow personally and inspire others to do the same.
